THE YOUNG HIGH-ROLLERS BREAKING SYDNEY CASINOS

THEY flash a P-plate driver’s licence to get in the door and walk out with millions.

Welcome to the new era of high-roller gamblers — young men, some barely 18, who hang out in skate parks by day and spend their nights betting on high stakes baccarat in The Star’s elite Sovereign Room.

Armed with the coveted “black” cards or the ultimate “diamond-tier” membership status, these are the new generation of gamblers weened on internet gaming until they’re old enough to walk into a casino — where they arrive experts.

Casino sources say the boom in young male card players has erupted in high-roller betting in Sydney in the past six months and it’s in the Sovereign Room, the ultra-exclusive betting floor that once accommodated mostly older Chinese VIPs, where they rule.

“...and then they sit down and pull $3 million off a table”

To snag an invite, these young punters are spending at least 30 hours a week betting and spending five-figures daily.

“You look at these young guys and you can see they have just walked out of the skate park and then they sit down and pull $3 million off a table,” says one Sovereign Room source, who asks not to be named.

“I’ve seen them walk to the door and you see security go to usher them out because of their age and how they’re dressed. Jeans and hoodies.

“But they flash their diamond cards and all of a sudden they’re welcomed in. Given drinks. Anything they want. Then they sit down among these older guys and ice them all.”

One member of this new generation “Chris”, 22, admits he spends around 40 hours a week betting on baccarat and sometimes goes two or three days without sleep.

But there’s always free rooms, offered to diamond-tier card holders at a rate of around seven per month, where they can nap and order room service before returning to the tables.

It started, he says, playing online poker before branching out into blackjack, high-limit slots and finally baccarat — what he says is referred to among his friends as “the only game” because of the ability to bet huge amounts. Sometimes up to $100,000 per hand.

“Blackjack and roulette really aren’t popular anymore because the odds lean too heavily towards the house,” says Chris, who also holds down a part-time clerical job.

“Baccarat is pretty much the closest thing to having any edge against the house at all.

“It’s about 45 per cent even against the house because you still can bet on a tie which happens once every eight times, statistically. It’s also a game where you can monitor trends. Or try to monitor trends. Because of course that doesn’t always work. But I watched my friend make $200,000 in a few minutes this week.”

But with big wins, he says, come big losses. “It happens pretty fast. You can be up $200 grand and then dust it all in a few hours. It’s pretty sickening.”

But rather than remain betting online, Chris says the lure of the high-rollers’ rooms — and qualifying for a “black” or “diamond” ranking — has become a new status symbol among the young betters.

It’s not enough, he says, to play on the main floor.

“You want to be able to flash the card, sign in your friends and drink for free,: he says of the Sovereign Room, which offers unlimited alcohol.

The cards also cover the casino restaurants, where high-roller gamblers can eat for half price or free in some cases.

The cost

It also offers access to private jets, to get free show tickets, luxury rooms and gifts.

As one high-roller croupier recounts: “I remember seeing a guy who looked about 18 pull $3 million off a table in the space of a couple of hours, then walk out and into one of the restaurants where he had a steak and chips. Calm as anything.”
