Here is a few reason why rote systems fail.  They use data that is not statistically significant enough.  Take the two systems I address in this video TBL and OTB4l.  Then why SS is a much better way to play and look for if you are starting out.  I hope this insight gets you thinking and asking yourself  "why am I making a bet and what statistic/information am I using to consider making a bet".
